Description:

This application allows users to receive warnings about the sea conditions along the coast of Costa Rica. Wind forecasts, wave height, period and direction, sea surface temperature, and ocean currents are provided for both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica, along with cautionary messages for swimmers, rip currents, and boat navigation. Users can also check tide predictions for the main coastal regions of Costa Rica. Additionally, informative notifications are available, featuring relevant news, definitions, useful emergency tips, and general information.
The main purpose is to provide automated updates every 6 hours on the sea conditions related to ocean-meteorological events that could pose a coastal marine threat in Costa Rica.
It caters to sea users who require timely information for their safe activities, including fishermen, tourists, surfers, permanent or occasional residents, as well as government offices, coast guards, port authorities, etc., to aid in distributing warnings in case of a coastal threat.
The Oceanographic Information Module (MIO) is a project established in June 2011 within the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR) at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), with financial support from the National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Response (CNE) of Costa Rica and collaboration from the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT).
